Long Journey Home/Visiting Japanese Fish Market

In the past, I've stayed behind and held the fort down in Denver, while my brother, Toshi, traveled to Japan to visit our sister restaurant and the fish market where we purchase the fish that flies fresh directly to Sushi Den Denver. Now it was my turn to journey to my homeland and observe the fast-paced world of the Japanese fishing industry for myself. My visit to Sushi Den in Fukuoka, Japan, and to one of the largest fish markets in Southern Japan, was a fascinating and truly awakening experience.

"Hey, Yasu, it's time to go," my youngest brother, Koichi, whispered in the darkness.

Fugu - Deadly, Poisonous Fish

What is the World's Most Deadly Feast?
Fugu, or Japanese Blowfish, is considered the most risky fish one can consume. If not prepared properly by a licensed, trained chef, there is a great chance that some traces of deadly poison will remain, and can bring about nearly instantaneous death. However, the flavor of fugu is so delicate and exquisite that many people are willing to take a chance!

Over the years, many Sushi Den customers have asked me with curiosity about fugu cuisine. In fact, there are quite a lot of Japanese restaurants that serve fugu in Japan, but only during the winter season. So whenever I am in Japan during winter, I never fail to have a fugu multi-course dinner (hot fugu sake, all kinds of fugu sashimi, fugu hot pot/stew, etc.) at one of the specialized fugu cuisine restaurants. On my recent visit I was on a mission to feast on fugu.

Luckily, a relative has a small well-known Japanese restaurant called "Umebachi" with seating for approximately 20--for members only. When I told Umebachi's owner/chef about my fugu article idea for Sushi Den's online newsletter, he was very kind to get Tora Fugu, the deadliest of all the fugu family, for me to try.
